The photographers on the What I Love About Vallejo page have outdone themselves today with their beautiful photographs of Mare Island. But, what was Mare Island like during its heyday in the war years of the 1940s? Heres a photo that might give you some idea of what the navy yard looked like during a shift change in 1942. In fact, the photograph is entitled Shift Change. This amazing photo of Mare Island was taken during the early days of World War II by Life magazine photographer Hansel Mieth. The photograph is part of the Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel Collection thats housed at the Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa. Mieth took a number of photos of women workers at Mare Island during World War II. Photojournalists Mieth and Hagel, a husband and wife team, photographed the lives of Americans during the Great Depression and World War II.
