The phrase ‘that’s someone’s daugher’ is well intentioned, - TopicsExpress

The phrase ‘that’s someone’s daugher’ is well intentioned, but it dehumanizes the daughter in question and places the respect for those involved on the parents of the daughter. In essence, one isn’t disrespecting a woman, but rather the poor father or mother. Again, the daughter takes lower precedence. That isnt a word used to describe a human being. I understand common parlance, but common parlance isnt helpful in raising the public debate. As womens equality has advanced, and it has advanced, there are lingering issues. If we change the language we change the nature of the conversation. Change the language. She’s a human being. Don’t treat human beings poorly.
