The physical distance between us is unrelated to the emotional distance that separates us. You can sit beside someone, even though your emotions are with another person far away (sometimes on a social media or television)... :) You can be doing a job, even though your emotions are with the one you dream about...You can be in any situation, while your emotions are somewhere else However, physical proximity is a bridge that can lead to emotional proximity (which in turn enhances physical safety). Passion increases with as our physical & emotional distances come together & is kindled from a small fire to an explosive flame when they join together.... To close emotional gaps, we should seek the people, things & opportunities we wish to draw into our emotional space, accept them despite their uniqueness (oddness), tolerate their inadequacies & assist ourselves or them to become adequate, even exceptional... Doing the opposite, increases emotional distance, & the farther we get emotionally from those who are physically around us, or the things we do, the more dangerous we become to each other, ourselves & our destiny. Compassion & love also close our emotional gaps, while dislike & hate opens them up to opposite extremes....This is all a little complex, but think about it.
