Jafar Ramini: Good day to you all As you may recall, I wrote about this subject only yesterday but due to what has happened over the weekend it does merit a second visit. Mr. John Kerry, US Secretary of State, interrupted his very busy schedule last Thursday and had a brief stop-over in Amman, Jordan. The declared reason for this rather grand gesture was, ‘to try to calm things down in Jerusalem’. He first had a tete a tete with our so-called President, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas and then he met with King Abdullah II of Jordan and Mr. Netanyahu. Mr. Kerry came out with the most banal, ineffective and ambigulous statement, “Prime Minister Netanyahu” he said, “has strongly reaffimed Israel’s commitment to uphold the status quo..” We all know how honourable Mr. Netanyahu is and how he always keeps his promises. We also know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the chameleon in Tel Aviv changes colour and position always to suit his own political agenda and those on the far right of Israeli politics to maintain his grip on power. Let’s not waste time on this and just examine how the ‘status quo’ is being kept in the occupied West Bank and particularly in East Jerusalem. The Israeli Occupation Force has lifted the ban on Palestinian/Muslim men to visit Alqsa Mosque and has shifted the ban instead to women. The result of this ban is that pious, Muslim Palestinian women have been reduced to offering their prayers in the dirty alleys of Jerusalem leading to Al Aqsa Mosque Compound. Not only that, a huge Israeli police presence yesterday morning escorted around 30 hardline Jewish squatters into the Al Aqsa Mosque compound and allowed them to carry out their Jewish rituals in the courtyards. A Palestinian child was shot between the eyes by the Israeli police force. A Palestinian bus driver was found hanged by his neck-tie on an Israeli bus in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, yesterday Mr. Avigdor Lieberman, Mr. Netanyahu’s Foreign Minister, said in a press conference with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “Anyone who dreams that the government of Israel will cave [to pressure] and limit building in Jerusalem is mistaken. We are prepared to defend our independence and sovereignty and there will be no compromise to that stance,” he said. Mr. Kerry, sir, if the actual meaning of the phrase, ‘Status Quo’ escapes you the facts as illustrated above should make it quite clear. To the Zionist occupiers of our land the Status Quo reads continued occupation, continued theft of Palestinian land, continued building of new settlements, continued expansion of existing ones, the demolition of our homes, dozens of arbitary arrests and kidnappings in and around the West Bank and, above all, the continued cold blooded murder of Palestinian men, women , children and the elderly.
