The picture book “The Snowman” by Raymond Briggs, published in 1978, quickly became a popular and widely honored children’s book, leading to an Oscar-nominated 1982 animated film featuring a score by prominent English composer Howard Blake. In addition to writing the orchestral score and the narration for the concert version, Blake composed both the music and lyrics to the hit song “Walking on Air.” The Dec. 6 BHSO performance of “The Snowman” will feature narrator Graham Thatcher, the artistic director and primary performer for Periaktos Productions (periaktos), which uses theater as a teaching tool in Continuing Legal Education for lawyers. He has performed in or directed more than 150 theater productions. Vocalist Paul Smith, who will sing “Walking on Air,” is a sixth-grader at South Middle School and a member of the Rapid City Children’s Choir. The Snowman book and movie have been such enduring favorites that they have spawned a busy international enterprise — thesnowman — with numerous concert performances each season.
