The pictures of Shudehill market are pure nostalgia for me. I am old enough to remember the poultry sellers at Shudehill, still trading in the 50s. There were also budgies and canaries in cages. Pigeon fanciers used to buy and sell there into the 60s. Kids used to try and throw their coats over the feral pigeons in the area, hoping to catch one and sell it to a dealer. A complete waste of time because the dealers knew the difference. Just further along the pavement was Allens second hand book stall, a Mecca for book lovers who could buy, sell or exchange. It used to be crowded on Saturdays. However, the big attraction for me came with the arrival of Tonys record stall in the late 50s. By now I had a motorbike and would be there most Saturdays (plus a visit to Mazel Radio on London Road). At Tonys you could add to your record collection for bargain prices provided you werent too bothered about them being the latest releases. You just had to check the condition carefully. Allens and Tonys traded well into the 70s until the monster that is the Arndale Centre swallowed them up, Click the photos for more info.
