The pioneers and forefathers of the steelpan fought many years to get the instrument to where it is today. The experimentation, the fight for acceptance as a legitimate musical instrument, the struggle to get it accept into society is all part of steelpan glorious history which must never be taken forgranted. However in 2013, when I see people who have no idea about how the instrument came to be, dis-respecting the elders and pioneers, I am saddened. When I see people sending disturbing messages to members of other bands leading to profanity and other unfortunate words, I am saddened. When I see people having to defend their ideas for innovations and game changing concepts in the steelband world, I am saddened. Its time for us to support each other to continue to uplift this beautiful instrument, time to come together as pannists, arrangers, music directors, pan lovers and tuners to make this an even better instrument and spread this ingeniousness worldwide.
