The pious intention of Chief Justice R M Lodha, of making the judiciary work 365 days by letting judges (and also of course, lawyers, clerks etc.) take staggered vacations, was stonewalled at inception. Lawyers -- who have enormous power to disrupt the working of the judiciary through strikes etc. -- dont want the idea to go through. The chiefs of the Bar Council of India and the Supreme Court Bar Association were quick to declare that they didnt think it was a good idea. Read the letter written by the Supreme Court Bar Association guy tinyurl/Adv-Pravin-Parekh This letter rakes up some interesting issues. A good letter, except that I feel its overall intention is to stonewall the CJIs proposal.
