At Lake Wheeler: Sunset And Sunrise By Joe Whitten Late autumn leaves along the lake’s far edge changed by turn of sun. Ruby deepened into garnet, topaz to amber, jade to malachite— and when the sun had gone, low hills stood like onyx silhouettes. Gray sky reflected in the rippled lake below, and all the stars blinked on before the moon came up to cast a silver way across the late, across the night. Then in its measured time, the circle closed as daylight came and spilled the sun so hill and tree burst into jeweled fire along the opal lake. So life must come to end— Let colors deepen, let day begin.
