The poet in the first stanza itself points out the "thankless" service in which these men and women part to defend the nation.Hours and hours they fight and they die as martyrs for their country.The poet ,as a civilian,salutes the war hero for his service,pointing out how his name will be found "not alone" on great stone,forgetting the fact that war heroes give up their lives ,not for recognition.(or is he bringing it out ironically?).
