The point of good dressage and becoming a good rider is not so that we or others think of ourselves as being special. The point of good riding is to communicate our respect for the horse. So the good dressage rider is always concerned with the quality of the aids and is genuine in the work with the horse. The principles of good dressage are for training ourselves and to develop self-control so we can extend ourselves properly to our horses. The discipline of riding by its nature should cultivate a lack of arrogance. When arrogance arises, it destroys gentleness and if we destroy our gentleness we lose the possibility of being aware and so we cannot extend ourselves properly in situation with the horse. Instead we generate aggression which destroys the relationship we are trying to build with the horse. Good dressage is friendly without arrogance. The true horse person is not better than the horse; just different. One is then able to be gentle without aggression. Such a rider is both forgiving and generous with the horse.
