The police MUST be held to a high standard. An impossible - TopicsExpress

The police MUST be held to a high standard. An impossible standard? Perhaps, but it is essential that we do so. True also of politicians, soldiers, and pretty much any essential group that has power over the rest of us. (Yeah, no kidding how were failing with politicians, but thats an ongoing rant.) The people with the hardest jobs, sometimes the most unpleasant jobs, cannot get a pass because what they do is so very very difficult that most of us cant imagine doing it. The police must be better than the average of society--much, much better. Unfortunately, far too often, they have not been. Theyve been...like regular people, and regular people cannot have such power. Anyone who points out that there is something really wrong there is thought a traitor. And with that thinking, nothing is fixed. The mayor’s comparatively gentle acknowledgment of the well-documented racial disparities in the criminal justice system has been met with a troubling reaction from both the police and much of white America: that acknowledging systemic racism and asking for police accountability is unnecessary at best and treacherous—or even dangerous—at worst.
