The possibility of perhaps… my wife Natalie and I had a major - TopicsExpress

The possibility of perhaps… my wife Natalie and I had a major acerbic argument over breakfast this morning which I found quite disturbing yet illuminating. I explained the story of an American soldier returning to Afghanistan who was refused a Motel 6 room because he was only 20 years old while the law requires the person renting the motel room be 21 years old. She replied, thats right, thats the law, and the hotel could not take the risk of breaking the law. I replied, that given the law, there are certain things a decent, patriotic American might do to accommodate the soldier. She asked, why?. I replied because theres something called an intelligence of the heart. Her beautiful albeit intractable Cartesian brain was incapable of grasping this rather ethereal concept, so our discussion degenerated. I understand that many Americans as well would suggest that the law is the law and it should not be broken. But I also believe that there is a larger intelligence involved which would even go so far as to suggest the hotel clerk might call a friend or family member to come get the soldier and put him up at their house for the night. My French wife could not unfortunately see her way clear to grasping that possibility...and I wonder why I felt compelled to pursue the point. I wonder if any of my friends my kindly shed some light…?
