The potential impact of this project will be fully flowered when this dev kit hits the streets. Imagine what happens when you tie wall sensing with navigating with flying bots or driving bots? Devs can find new ways to give many different mobile tools more intelligent autonomy. Here the dev kit is on a pad...but imagine a Tango smart phone...placed on a quadrocopter that leverages the geometry data gathered by the device and the gps radio to refine the copters position....allowing real time way finding within a complex environment. Googles Self Driving car currently does a more advanced version of this but there are ways to multiply the accuracy by using multiple devices in ways that can achieve novel solution approaches....getting kits in the hands of devs. looking to make these tools is a great way for google to distribute the task of finding new solutions for the tech. Ive seen similar things done with x box kinect devices but the wayfinding device was not mounted to the copter .... keep in mind that by 2020 this dev. kit device would conceivably be much smaller and much more powerful and have vision...plus there will be a suite of apps. to use them to embed such devices into the physical world....and thus expedite the autonomous future that is coming like gangbusters.
