The power of a picture... Some pictures are truly worth a thousand words... Photo and video are an integral tool in WNS research. Not only do we use photos in the field to help identify bat species and visible signs of WNS, but each time bats are aroused from simulated hibernation in climate controlled chambers volunteers UV photograph each bats wings. Photos are analysed with a wing score rating to track the WNS fungus progression/regression and wing healing scar tissue. Bats in chamber are UV video monitored 24/7 for activity and arousal from torpor, whether it be eating, drinking or just general movement. Much of the photographic work is done by volunteers to free researchers valuable time for WNS treatments and more critical scientific procedures.
