The power of meditation, mantra, and breath My oldest daughter - TopicsExpress

The power of meditation, mantra, and breath My oldest daughter had a migraine yesterday and we did not catch it in time to get her medication on board to stop the process. So, in the midst of a true full-blown migraine, she began to panic and freak out. I knew it would take time for the medication to begin to work and although I was hoping she could make it through, she begged me to take her to a doctor. When she reported symptoms to me that arent typical for migraine, I had my husband load her in the car and I took off for urgent care, worried that it might be something else. As we were driving, I began to work with her in controlling the breath-deep inhale, exhale and say OM . I must have repeated this a hundred times on our way to the facility. By the time we arrived, she had gone from screaming and crying to resting softly in the seat beside me. When she said I can walk, I knew she was going to be fine, so I loaded her back into the car and drove her back home, gloriously skipping the Urgent Care process. I helped her focus on her breath and mantra all the way home, getting her to visualize an ocean wave taking her pain out to sea with each exhale. By the time we pulled into the driveway, she was sleeping peacefully. My husband carried her back into the house and laid her down in her dark quiet bedroom where I continued to keep her calm and help her focus on her breath. It was a strange experience where I used my skills in guiding meditation as well as my Doula skills. Yes, it was a lot like treating a laboring woman! At the same time, I was rubbing her back like a mother trying to put her infant child to bed. This illustrates to me the amazing power we hold within our minds and our ability to transcend what is happening to us simply by losing ourselves in the sensation of the breath. Im so thankful I was able to help her through an awful migraine with just words.
