“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” – Amendment X, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution. Of the ten amendments written in the Bill of Rights, why focus on Amendment X? The language written in Amendment X of the Bill of Rights embodies: the essence and foundation necessary for individual rights and freedoms inherent in the U.S. Constitution. Subsequently, individual power, irrespective of federal or state’s power must be the privy of the individual. An individual must never fully cede power to governance or government. What is government, but a body supposedly expressing the collective will of those subordinate to it. However, the symbiotic relationship between the individual and government must not be abused by either. I have the right, the responsibility, to express my individual power for the purpose(s) to insist that government is responsive to me. And as a citizen, to take action that insures…my personal power will not be abdicated to the government. Henry David Thoreau’s “Resistance to Civil Government” resonates strongly with me. His profoundly moving words “to speak practically and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves no-government men, I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government” (xroads.virginia.edu), strikes a chord. It is my personal responsibility to insure….better government by my power, in conjunction with the power of other ordinary citizens insures freedom.
