The precedence has long been established. The first thing to remember is that there is no study of economics because economics always operates within a political environment so it is politiconomics. When politiconomics first started measuring things like GDP - Gross Domestic Product, it only considered what you sell the end product for, never accounting for the diminished natural resources it took to make it, which include planetary and ecological damage. It only measured one side of the equation. So, if you add up all of the GDP from every country, ever, even just since we started measuring it, multiply it by inflation and reduce that total by money already paid out, the result is an astronomical amount of eco-debt sitting out there in the form of dying oceans, climate change, diseases, toxicity of our land, and more. The purpose of regulations is to limit the amount of eco-debt a corporation can leave behind as an expense for others to pay. If no eco-debt is allowed, there is no profit. In fact, there would usually be an expense since you are using something up. However, nobody would undertake development in a greed driven - which is to say, human - society, without profit. That is why socialism always collapses. It tries to operate without taking human nature into account. Humans driving force is to be better than. Our key motivating factor is to measure ourselves against others in the world, and to, in some way, feel that we are better than. That is the root of self esteem. Therefore, if humans are to have progress and we do want progress, we must allow for some profit. The question is how much. A Meritocracy says we get what we earn. Today, however, weve gotten to the point where those who earned a little found ways to corrupt the entire system and how have been granted license to steal. They get enormously wealthy, the masses become extremely poor, and the eco-debt has now grown to the point where it is bankrupting the entire planet - and that bankruptcy is called The Sixth Great Extinction.
