The premises of the Plateau State Government House, Tuesday - TopicsExpress

The premises of the Plateau State Government House, Tuesday witnessed one of its tightest security arrangements in history as members of the State House of Assembly met to finalize issues on the recent crisis that rocked the legislature. The gallery of the mini-conference hall of the government house was filled to capacity as journalists from within and outside the state gathered to catch a first-hand shot of the developments. Although the day’s legislative proceedings were devoid of rancour, but there was palpable tension amongst the members as to who will emerge as the new Speaker. The likely members amongst whom the new Speaker is to emerge following the present Speaker, John Clark Dabwan’s agreement to resign sequel to allegations of money laundering levelled against him are Hon. Titus Ayuba Alams representing Bokkos Constituency, Hon. Timothy Golu, Kanke Constituency and the former Speaker of the House, Hon. Istifanus Mwansat who represents Pankshin South Constituency. All the contending members are from the Plateau Central Senatorial District where the House’s constitutional zoning still holds. While Hon. Titus Alams is said to be the State Governor, Jonah Jang’s favorite candidate, there are indications that Hon. Istifanus Mwansat and his Kanke counterpart, Timothy Golu may have an upper hand at the legislative level following fears of a repeat of the past where the former speaker and the governor were allegedly involved in an unhealthy romance that disallowed the House the freehand to carry out its constitutional duties. As at the time of filing in this report, no sitting had held yet as the members were seen having two-by-two and group discussions possibly on the contending issues, while the state governor and all his principal staff have temporarily relocated to the new governor’s lodge and office in Jishe to continue with other official assignments as they calmly await the outcome of the House’s sitting for the day. The Plateau State House of Assembly has for some months now been using the conference hall of the official government house, Rayfield for its sittings following the commencement of general renovations presently on-going at the State Legislative Complex.
