The present generation may not know much of Olympian PT Usha ( who turned 50 yesterday)including what have been her achievement Hailing from a sleepy village Payyoli near Vadakara in Kozhikode District PT Usha who started running the races on bare foot in school competitions, with sheer hard work and great determination rose to be the greatest woman athlete India has ever produced ,standing head and shoulders above even the greatest male athlete of India,the flying Sikh ,Milkha Singh USHA WAS THE -first Malayalee and first Indian woman athlete to compete in an Olympics -youngest Indian to participate in an Olympic Games -only Indian athlete who won medals in 4 successive Asian Games - first Indian to win the Greatest Woman Athlete award in Asian Athletic Meet -only Indian woman athlete who won the award for the best Asian athlete consecutively for 5 years -Winner of 33 medals including 13 gold in Asian Games and Asian Championships. -Winner of the Best Sportswoman of India award consecutively for 5 years -Winner of 103 medals in all in national and international meets -Winner of of 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in Jakartha Asian Games,gold in 100 meters,200 meters,400 meters, 400 meters hurdles and 4x400 meters relay and bronze in 4x100 meters relay None have been able to break the above records of Usha so far . No wonder she is known as Payyoli Express , Indian Sprint Queen, the Girl with the Golden heels etc Let her dream of bringing an athletic gold medal to India in an Olympics through her wards in her Usha School of Athletics ,come true soon My family members and I and of course SBT were lucky to have been associated with her while she was celebrating her first Asian Games medals in 1982 in the New Delhi Asian Games -
