The presidency has truly run out of ideas to protect Jacob Zuma. On Tuesday they called an opinion piece by columnist Max du Preez about President Jacob Zuma racist and mind-boggling. Mind-boggling? I read the piece, Max du Preez was simply stating the truth. They specifically had it in for Max because they said when Judge Hilary Squires was reported by the media to have said Zuma had a generally corrupt relationship with fraud-convicted Schabir Shaik - he (Squires) refuted it. Its all semantics and sophistry, even if in November 2006, Squires wrote to Business Day indicating that he never uttered those words. In the public domain (Wikipedia, the court papers and in the world press), this was reported about the trial: The Schabir Shaik trial was one of the most important court trials in post-apartheid South Africa. The case, tried in the Durban and Coast Local Division of the High Court before Judge Hilary Squires, proved the fraudulent and corrupt relationship between Durban-based businessman Schabir Shaik and South African politician and anti-apartheid leader Jacob Zuma. Schaiks writing off of Zumas significant personal loans in 1999 had raised suspicions about their financial activities. Shaiks petition of appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal has failed; Shaik started to serve his sentence of 15 years on 9 November 2006. Well, we all know Shaik is living it up at his mansion in Durban, jail was not for him. What part of that judgement did the presidency not understand? Ive also noticed that they love using the word mischievous (like Robert Mugabe) over and over again in their press releases. Huh? Dis n kak woord man. Use something new. And of course, if you criticise the ANC, and youre white, youre a racist. When Max du Preez was editor of Vrye Weekblad, fighting apartheid and endangering his own life, most of the people who say this were still in their nappies. How original. Racist because you tell the truth. Give me a break.
