The priests could not enter into the house of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house." (2 Chronicles 7:2, NASB95) "Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them." (Ezekiel 10:18-19, NASB95) One of the saddest images in the Old Testament is seen in the withdrawal of the visible glory of God from His Temple. When Solomon dedicated the temple, the glory came. Over 400 years later, the people had so departed from God’s direction that God Himself departed from them. It was only a matter of time before the nation was doomed and its residents carted to Babylon for 70 years of captivity. If it was easy for the Jewish people to depart from God when His Temple and His visible presence was among them, how much easier for those today who do not have visible manifestations of Glory? An old hymn describes it well: Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love! How distressing that these words are true. We have a “bent toward sinning” that causes us to stray from God. The only answer is to be continually relying on the Holy Spirit. His filling is sufficient for our walk. In today’s world, God does not dwell in an earthly temple, but in our heart. Is your temple filled with the glory of God today?
