The problem is beyond introspection and even the individual - it is the entire methodology that is used is flawed. Most of the people at BCCI are not professional general managers of any caliber. For example, they chose Gautam Ghambir - on what basis ? Yet, Naman Ojha was called up to sit on the bench. Pandey never got a chance but Pankaj got two. How did they determine that 3 pace bowlers would be enough when England is bowling 4 pacers plus Moeen. The problem here is clear - its people sticking their finger up in the air to figure out which way the wind is blowing. This isnt a serious objective analysis of the players ability. The type of aggregate statistics we get are poor choices for team selection because those statistics are not indicators of current form nor are they directly comparable. For example, if Player A scored a 100 against a weak opposition how does that 100 compare to a 55 against a strong opposition by player B.
