The problem is that Bernardi is RIGHT when he claims that the outcomes for the children of single parents are significantly worse than those for the children of two parent families:( All of the indicators of success that he cites as being lower in those children from one parent families ARE!!! What he fails to realise (or perhaps wilfully chooses not to acknowledge) is that the reasons for such significantly lower outcomes can be largely explained by the SOCIAL and ECONOMIC disadvantages suffered by those families:( Instead of the current reaction of those who want to defend sole parenting (often angrily denying the evidence), it behoves us to OWN and proclaim the terrible discrepancies in outcomes and to sheet home the blame to prejudice/stigma/discrimination, inadequate support structures, etc etc!!!
