The problem of evil, in a sense, only exists if you believe there - TopicsExpress

The problem of evil, in a sense, only exists if you believe there is an ultimate good, a way things should be. In a godless, meaningless universe, there is no reason that evil should not be. Evil is just random events that dont ultimately matter one way or another. Now, we can complain about how it hurts us, how it lessens our quality of life, or the stability of society, and how we should resist it. That is all well & good & if I were an atheist, I would agree that we should work against what we consider evil because I like a pleasant life & a stable society & wish that all people, especially the most helpless, could enjoy that. But my fight against evil would be pragmatic & utilitarian, while I would have to concede on a metaphysical level, the Cosmos does not care. In a universe with a non-transcendent Good, the question is not Why do bad things happen to good people? but Why shouldnt bad things happen to good people? Its all just meaningless happenstance.
