The problem with appealing to church tradition to legitimize a way of thinking or practice is that tradition had a way of being self reinforcing; ie, a tradition carries with it the effect of groupthink and repetition which creates the dynamic for it to be further perpetuated as a valid tradition. But the problem of ignoring tradition is the opposite of groupthink; one easily can interpret things in a self reinforcing echo chamber of historical isolation and be just as prone to errors.
