The problem with commodity feminism is that it is aimed at the readers of fashion mags like Elle and those who can afford to pay £40 for a T shirt. If the Fawcett Society wanted to drive change and promote womens rights it should be engaging with women who work in shops and factories, getting them to wear feminist T shirts, not millionaire politicians. By focussing on the affluent middle class the Fawcett Society at a stroke recreated the divide between Christabel Pankhursts top down version of the Suffragettes and that of Sylvia Pankhust, based on ordinary working women.
