The problem with the Alt-comedy genre is that it necessarily establishes an intellectual distance between audience and comic sufficiently vast that the comic may oftentimes hide behind it, with the result that he will often never quite come around to finding himself a comedian, and will proceed into the upper stages of the entertainment business without all the constituent parts necessary to fulfill that particular cultural role.
