The problem with the American educational system is two-fold. - TopicsExpress

The problem with the American educational system is two-fold. Since the Department of Education was established in 1979, the foundations of the system are built on money and greed, and keeping the status quo, both in terms of socio-economics and race. The mission of modern education should be three-fold. Education should prepare young people for: 1) Life. Skills fostered in the classroom should mirror real-life application. Life isnt lived in a vacuum; its lived in the messiness of the mundane. Life isnt a textbook; its experiential. Its not about your academic status; its about becoming a well-rounded individual capable of living a fulfilling life. 2) Liberty. Skills fostered in the classroom should have an end game of independent living in mind, body, and soul. Students need to learn to think for themselves, care for themselves, question for themselves, feel for themselves, and live for themselves. Dependency is not an option, with an understanding that we live in community with other people. 3) Pursuing happiness. Skills fostered in the classroom should bolster a student to develop healthy desires and passions. They need to develop the ability to take risks, make mistakes, get dirty, and dust themselves off. Love isnt merely an emotion that overtakes them in whirlwinds, but a series of conscious choices in family, friends, and lovers, and when we love, we run the risk of breaking our hearts, joyously in the pursuit of happiness. This brings us back to the experiential nature of life and doing this all in an environment of liberty. None of these are mutually exclusive. Ive been told that to build a system like this is closed minded because these are American ideals; not every country should have to follow life, liberty, and pursuing happiness. Id submit that these arent American ideals, but when our founders wrote these values in our founding documents, it was a testament to the desire of all people. Who doesnt want a fulfilling life? Who doesnt want to be free? Who doesnt want to pursue happiness? One would find that if anyone said no to any of these questions, there is usually something wrong with them, blockages emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or physically. Most people desire these values, come what may.
