The problem with the XKCD comic on passwords is that although hes absolutely right -- weve successfully trained everyone to use passwords that are hard for humans to remember, but easy for computers to guess -- you dont actually get to choose your own rules for passwords. You have to comply with the rules of whoever controls such things. I made myself a little password generator this morning that is a compromise -- has upper and lower case, punctuation, digits, and > 8 chars, but is still not absurdly hard to remember or type into a smartphone.
