The processing time for Canadians sponsoring their spouse for immigration has almost doubled over the past year. Since the sponsored spouse cannot work, many of these families are struggling to support themselves on one income for up to two years. Along with my colleague, Official Opposition Immigration Critic Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, I have been bringing this issue to the attention of Citizenship & Immigration Minister Chris Alexander for several months. I am happy to announce that this pressure by the affected families and my colleagues resulted in a new work permit pilot project, which allows sponsored spouses to contribute to the economy and take part in supporting their family while they wait for their application to be processed.
