The prophet, Micah, is considered one of the 12 minor prophets in - TopicsExpress

The prophet, Micah, is considered one of the 12 minor prophets in the Tanach (Torah, Prophets and Writings), who prophesied in the early 8th century BCE in the area of Judah. He was very active before the fall of Samaria in 722 BCE, and having witnessed its downfall we can surmise that Micah, during his lifetime, knew violence and destruction. It would seem that although we live approximately 2750 years after the time of Micah, much has not changed. We too, have been witnesses to much violence, destruction and sorrow over the past few weeks. Missiles have downed an airliner over the Ukraine, thousands have been murdered in Syria, bombs are being aimed and fired at innocent Israelis all throughout the country and violence is raging in all countries and continents around the world. One only needs to turn on the news or lift up the newspaper to see these atrocities occurring all around us. If we were to return to Micah and read his words, we would find a message of hope within his prophecy. In chapter four of the Book of Micah, we read the following words; “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift sword against nation, and they shall not again experience war. People shall dwell under their own vines, under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid” (Micah 4:3-4). It is this message of a more peaceful future that Micah spoke about that resonates with me today, and I hope that those words spoken almost three millennium ago, will come true in our day as well. May the week ahead be one filled with peace and security, for us, for Israel and for all humanity.
