The prophet used to call people to Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah by teaching them its meaning and the way to apply it in their lives, when they accepted all that he taught them, they used to say it as a symbol of their acceptance. The prophet never called people to say Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah, he called them to know it, believe it, apply it and show all of this by saying Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah. Allah asked us, before taking Jezya or resorting to the sword to call them not to say it but to know it and believe it, if this was not so, we could just negotiate with them the terms of peace based on them saying Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah, on which point we go back home, even if the manifestations of Shirk are still spread in their country.
