The proposition for an art museum was made by John Jay of New York, a man then into his middle age, before a company of countrymen at a Fourth of July dinner, who had gathered to celebrate the occasion. Jay later recalled how it was this simple suggestion, that it was time to lay the foundation, inspired a group of gentlemen who were present to organize together to carry out the task. Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. was among the members behind the undertaking when the charter for the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York was created. Admission to the MET is pay as you wish.
