The prototype of the womens dress of the autochtonous population in Romania refered to some statuetes from 1900-1200 B.C. , comprises rudimentary elements , which in their general lines will preserved in the time of the thousands of years , with all their development from the morphological , ornamental and chromatic point of view . These elements are : the shirt , fota ( peasant skirt ) and the girdle inclusively some decorative aspects , here we mention altita ( the decorated portion applied on arm , near shoulder ) at the shirt . Herodot , through his reffering at the ornaments of embroidery from the Thracians dress gives a confirmation and testimony too , for a following period after the process of cultural differentiation between Thracians and Illyrians . From the Daco-Roman period are preserved the eloquent representation as the bas-reliefs with Geto- Daco figures which curl round Trajans column . After the organization of the first feudal Romanian state , more and more testimonies are coming to demonstrate the evolution of the traditional costume like : Cronicum Pictum Vindobonense ( 14-th century ) , mural pictures in churches ( beginning with 15-th century ) , albums and descriptions from the 16th century till the 19 th century and ethnographical reseraches .
