The proverbial missing circus ape from 1930 Fremont, Ohio. SAYS HIS DOG FOUGHT ‘APE’ Farmer Says Animal Smelled Like Circus Cages Fremont, June 20 The supposedly missing circus ape which terrorized Norwalk two weeks ago, and was believed to have been near Fremont a few days later, reappeared at the farm of Reuben Zweilly in the same neighborhood Thursday night. Zweilly’s fox-terrier dog attacked the strange animal, which was said to have been extremely malodorous and drove it away, while Zweilly went into the house to get a shot-gun and lantern. Because of the darkness Zweilly said he did not see the supposed ape, but it carried with it a strong odor similar to the cages of Simian beats in zoos and circuses. A search of the surrounding fields and woods by posses Thursday night and Friday, failed to reveal any further traces of the animal however, Zweilly’s dog was only slightly bruised and scratched in the encounter.
