The public transportation system in Chicago(and probably around - TopicsExpress

The public transportation system in Chicago(and probably around the country as well)could be set up a whole lot better than it is. Chicagos new Ventra card could have led the way into the future. Instead it keeps to the same pre-paid system we have all had it for the past umpteen decades. Yeah, the Ventra card will also be used as a credit card so people actually spending money to buy such an expensive card($100.00 for a monthly pass which is double any fare unless people ride a lot during that time)can justify spending all that money. But if Mayor Emanuel and the people overseeing transportation REALY wanted to be futuristic about how fares get paid they would have buses and trains work like taxis do. Instead of pre-paying a set amount of money cab riders only pay for the time they spend being driven anywhere. That way anyone riding only a few blocks wont have to pay fora more expensiveblock ratiothan anyone riding longer. The way things would work is the buses and trains have a passenger counter.
