The purpose of karate in not the study of bunkai, regardless of which paradigm of meaning you use. Karate is action, Unpredictable action when in confrontation. Bunkai is just one of the tools to develop potential. There are no style points as to which bunkai you use. Nor is it advisable to ignore any of the tools, though these is a wide variety of choice in using them. In confrontation ,IMO, the wisest plan is to become unpredictable, which includes even becoming predictable but your execution so crisp it becomes unstoppable. Knowing possible answers (bunkai) is not as useful as executing them to perfection. But life can be long, and one should always try and learn more, providing more options. Continual training would be the goal, not setting limits and working on developing new skills. I remember one interview with a senior daito ryu instructor. Then in his 70’s he was working on how to shift one’s arm when grabbed to align the opponents joints and sending an immobilizing shock into their body with a core shift. Subtle and an example of working to understand more. The best I have trained with never stop working. Unknowable the real key to karate. When an opponent has no idea of your training, every response is possible and unexpected.
