The question of memory and particularly how the Goldreich - TopicsExpress

The question of memory and particularly how the Goldreich children, Paul & Nicholas, could vividly and with such clarity recollect events that happened over 50 years ago, when they were and 5 & 7 years old, was raised in a previous posting. Was it down to to the fact that they lived through a very unique period, that the events and activities that took place on the farm were indelibly imprinted on their memories or was it something as simple as to the fact that they just have good memories! As part of the Legacy & Memory series Liliesleaf in conjunction with its partners have been looking at the question of how one remembers and addresses the past. At an event this past sunday entitled “How a Country Remembers it’s Past”, the CEO of Liliesleaf spoke on the meaning of history. During the course of his talk he made reference to an article written by David Crabtree entitled the “Importance of History”. In the article Crabtree states that “modern society, however has turned its back on the past. We live in a time of rapid change, a time of progress. We prefer to define ourselves in terms of where we are going, not where we come from”. Maybe then a reason as to why Paul & Nicholas have such vivid and lucid recollections of the past can be down to the fact that the past was important to them and their generation as it played a significant role in not only defining them but also shaping their relationship to the present and their expectations of the future.
