The quicker we realize that we are the architect of our own frustrations and disappointments, the better, because once we do, we are able to avoid years of pointless suffering. Ideally, the spiritual journey is about accelerating the process to transformation/ rebirth, and not extending it throughout the course of a lifetime, only to realize in old age just how unwilling to change and controlling we had always been. The reason why this part in awakening is so essential is because the personality thats cling to, the importance of personal identity, the me that we invest so much time and energy in preserving, is ultimately an illusion, founded on shallow identification (by appearance, form, history, borrowed knowledge, etc). With aging, and as death nears, we then wear down and destroy this false sense of self. By learning to let go of fabricated mentalities, pride, ego, blame, guilt, limitations from self-doubt, and fears of confronting our ignorance, we will inevitably quicken the process of enlightenment and possibly give ourselves more time to experience our divine nature while still alive.
