The quirky, twee folk-pop of Noah and the Whale is not to - TopicsExpress

The quirky, twee folk-pop of Noah and the Whale is not to everyones taste. In small doses, I find it a pleasant diversion. Their biggest hit, 5 Years Time is now eight years old. Oh well in five years time we could be walking round a zoo With the sun shining down over me and you. As its title suggests, the song imagines a future five years hence, one in which the singer hopes love will have endured and deepened. In keeping with the theme of new love or untempered longing. the tone is sweet and optimistic. However, the mood is undermined or even inverted by the use of the future condition tense - We could...; You might just prove me wrong. This is not the voice of a person who truly believes that love will bloom, but rather expects it to whither. Those who can access past hurts will be in tunewith its essentially plaintive, fantastic and ironic nature. It is the sound of thwarted or unrequited love. This is a song of someone who didnt get the blue-eyed boy or the red-haired girl.
