The radicals within the Republican Party are paralyzing this nation. What is happening in America today is putting our democracy at risk. For the past two weeks my wife and I have been visiting the Baltic Countries. It is sobering to realize how quickly democracy was taken from some of these countries and only restored after the fall of the Soviet Union. The rise of totalitarian regimes in Germany and Russia did not have to happen, but they did. Russia today is a democracy in name only, but in the other Baltic nations it is quite different. They are doing well in comparison the rest of the world including the United States. What is striking about each of these countries is the protections they have for the poor and the middle class, the focus they have on the need to constantly improve their infrastructure which is already decades ahead of the United States, the need they see for a clean environment, and the compassion they have for others in general. Universal health care is a given in each of these countries, only America, among the developed nations of the world, refuses to provide health care for all its people. Sensible gun laws and low crime rates are part of the social fabric of these nations. The people with whom we have met who lived under the oppression of totalitarian regimes and now enjoy freedom have touched our lives. What is so unsettling is that we have those in our country who insist on their own way, a way which is the polar opposite of compassion, conservation, and the very foundation of democracy, the willingness to work with and compromise with those with whom they differ. We are allowing a few radical plutocrats to corrupt and destroy our democracy. Plutocrats who hide behind weak politicians and a "movement" they have created to undo all of the progress America has made in the 20th century. We need to wake up before it is too late.
