The reaction from the membership of the Nurses Association comes after Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony and members of cabinet sat down with Public sector representatives putting forward proposed wage adjustments. According to the President of the Nurses Association, the membership is extremely dissatisfied with the Government proposals. The Government’s wage adjustments include a 5% cut from grades 4 to 21. The Government also proposes a wage freeze to cover the current triennium of wage negotiations. Leonce who spoke ahead of a meeting with the nurses says that ultimately the decision to accept the government wage adjustments lies in the hands of the membership. Leonce says attendees who include executive officials of the Victoria Hospital will address the alleged laying-off of temporary nurses employed at the hospital. Approximately 50 nurses were allegedly dismissed from the hospital. Leonce says although the nurses were hired on a seasonal contract, the dismissal was unjustified. She says the appalling treatment of health care professionals has forced qualified practitioners to seek gainful employment in other countries while the healthcare facilities in Saint Lucia remain inadequately staffed.
