The reaction of some to the Senate report released yesterday seems to be that we should simply trust the CIA to get things right. So heres this reminder, in 2004 the CIA mistakenly identified a German citizen as a member of a terrorist group, because of his similar sounding name. Khaled el-Masri was held in a secret facility in Afghanistan for months, and says he experienced torture techniques that go beyond even what is in the Senate report. Even after the CIA realized their error, they continued to torture the man. He was eventually flown to Albania, and dumped on the side of a road with no explanation. The US government has still admitted no wrongdoing in the case, and US courts have refused to hear his case, claiming doing so would compromise national security.
