The reason this story is so important is because this is happening all over California, and has been for years. How can anyone possibly justify this kind of compensation - especially when, according to the Contra Costa Times, only 6.7% of their emergency responses in 2011 were for actual fires? Why arent they hiring independent contractors to handle medical emergencies? Why arent they taking pay cuts? Even if they are fighting fires all the time, why are they making median compensation of $263,000 per year? Isnt it amazing that there are VOLUNTEERS who also work in this fire district, also risking their lives to fight the same fires?
