The reason why the extremists are more powerful than those who oppose them is not because they have greater public support but because anti-extremist elements of society are not organised as a force. Even if 99% of Pakistanis are opposed to extremism, they will never win as long as the extremists are better organised than the majority. The lesson of history has always been that it is not the larger force but the more organised force that wins all battles; whether political, ideological, military, economic or cultural. Weve lit our candles, weve raised a few slogans, weve updated our statuses, weve assuaged our guilty consciousness and doused our anger. Now its back to business as usual for the majority. But is that the case with the extremists? Not in the least, they are organised for a long war against the people of Pakistan. And they have powerful friends who justify their every move in every major institution. The key thing to understand is that we cannot hope to win without organisation. And we cannot build organisation without sacrificing the other activities of our life. And as long as we are not ready to take out the time to build such organisations, the battle is already lost.
