The rebranding is of course, part of a wider national repositioning. Saudi Arabia finds itself slightly at sea. It was a country that could happily go about its business knowing that it was both an indispensable ally to the west in the Arab world, and a regional economic and religious powerhouse, enjoying an avuncular relationship with the rest of the Arab worlds dictators. But the volatility of the Arab Spring, Qatars rise as a capricious Gulf neighbour that just won’t play ball, and Americas philosophical withdrawal from what it now sees as a confusing and unpredictable Arab world, have left Saudi Arabian policymakers scrambling to carve out a new place for the country. Not to mention Irans demotion from regional arch villain. I mean, even Iranian women can drive. theguardian/commentisfree/2014/mar/20/saudi-arabia-human-rights-rebrand-women-driving
