The recent article, 10 Organizations Tthat Are Changing The World was okay but why dont we boil it down to something simple that would let us solve many of the problems those organizations claim to deal with? Two questions: Where does our food come from? Why? I live in Missouri where government regulations have shut down more than 70% of the dairy farms since 1980. Most of our milk comes from California. Is it cheaper to raise and milk cows in California? Is the labor cost greater than the cost in fuel and air quality of trucking milk 3500 miles? How can it be economically more feasible to produce milk for Missourians in California? Answer: It only works because of government intervention. Go to the grocery store and check out the fish and shrimp. Most, whether wild caught or farm raised comes from China and Vietnam. When the Gulf of Mexico is one of the largest fisheries on earth and government regulations have closed many of Americas fish farms, how can it be cheaper to ship fish half way around the world to put on the shelves of your grocery store? Wait a minute... China! Arent they one of the places a bunch of the computer viruses have been tracked back to? Are they not waging economic war on the US? Isnt that the place that sent us the poisoned sheetrock that was so bad we had to tear down houses that contained it? Didnt they send us pet food that killed our dogs? And I want to trust the safety of the food they send me to eat because? Study after study shows that mono cultures whether forests, food crops, grasses, etc., are not ideal ways to grow things yet we grant big Ag and Big Food virtual monopolies and allow them to use GMOs and mono-culture techniques to produce the food we eat and we dont even force them to tell us that were eating GMO foods or what chemicals they have been treated with? This is only a handful of questions we all need to be asking of our local, state and federal government officials. Saving our environment, our jobs and our economy is a lot simpler than we make it out to be. Simple but not easy. Its work. We all need to be pro-active and constantly in the faces of our Representatives and Senators. We need to demand action. We need to hold them accountable and vote them out when they fail to do what we tell them.
