The recent confiscation by Israel of even more West Bank land for settlement highlights yet again that even the prospect of continued warfare with Palestinian factions does not dissuade this Israeli government from pursuing this obstinately and belligerently cynical posture toward any peace process. As Ive observed many times this is potentially the most divisive to the social fabric of Israel and the most challenging and politically risky to any Israeli government. Security, not lebensraum, is the existential concern for Israelis. Any 3rd party efforts to pursue a peace agreement must reassure them that that concern will be unequivocally supported; iron-clad. I dont know what need is comparable in importance to the Palestinians but for each side a carrot, and not a stick, is the only thing to proffer to both sides since neither is subject to pressure or intimidation.
