The replacing of tar and cinder walks and the remaining plank - TopicsExpress

The replacing of tar and cinder walks and the remaining plank walks by granolithic, as cement was then called, was undertaken after an experimental piece laid around the north-east corner of Dunn and Colborne Streets proved satisfactory. Many of the walks we tread today were laid in 1905 by the Simcoe Paving Company or in 1907 by the Maple Leaf Paving Company. According to the inspector, Chief Sumner, the granolithic walks cost 12 1/2 cents per square foot and most of the town was paved for somewhat under $8,000. All local improvements were paid for by a frontage tax extending over a number of years. Hazel C. Mathews, Oakville And The Sixteen (University of Toronto Press 1953, 1971)
